Here’s a fine project for the Dogs Days of August…finish reading the complete set of Martin Beck mysteries by Sjöwall and Wahlöö. The ten novels (beginning with Roseanna published in 1967) that collectively make up The Story of A Crime—not only contains some of the best police procedurals ever written, but works that provide an insightful exploration of Swedish society during the 1960s and 70s.
The books are highly addictive and we have Vintage Crime / Black Lizard Books to thank for providing the fix, i.e., keeping the novels in print.
Martin Beck is no Dirty Harry, but an ordinary man who muddles through. His job is far from glamorous, but someone has to do it. Thankfully it’s Beck.
Don’t get the wrong impression… there is humor and suspense in these tales with their superbly crafted plots…and much to admire in what the authors have accomplished in this remarkable series.
Order the first here and the next thing you know you’ll have a stack like mine.
UPDATE: AUGUST 10
Two great Beck covers by artist & Zoom Street contributor, John Nickle:
Alas, the new covers can’t hold a candle to Nickle’s work.
