If you’ve ever wondered why flash drives have to be dull…well, it turns out they don’t.
Thanks to a friend—artist Barbara LaPlaca Hardy—I discovered Mimobot: Designer USB Flash Drives. The other day she Fed-Ex’d me some files and when I opened the envelope out popped the cutest little flash drive I’d ever seen. A handwritten note was included, saying “I need the drive back—sorry!”
Perfectly understandable. Who in her right mind would want to part with a whacky little character like this?
In 2005, the Boston-based design house Mimoco decided to add a whole lot of dash to the commonplace flash and Mimobot flash drives were born. Thus, drab data storage became a colorful, collectable underground art toy.
OK, Babs, you can have your bot back now, because I just ordered two—a vintage Batman drive for me, and Gary Baseman’s Toby for my wife. (If I’d only ordered one I’d have a fight on my hands.)
The stats are sweet & simple:
- 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB capacities
- Hi-speed USB 2.0
- Mac/PC compatible
- 2.5″ tall by 1″ wide
And there are loads of characters to choose from.
“Come on, Robin, to the Bat Cave! There’s not a moment to lose! We’ve got to get our hands on some cool Mimobots!”
