Tuli, our standard poodle, has a lot of expressions, including this one when he looks at you out of the corner of his eye.
To capture it I hand-held an Orbis ring flash off camera to the left. [1/60 sec at f/11; 1/3 EV. 24mm. Nikon D90]. I like the way the light wraps around the subject and adds punch to the highlights.
The Orbis is actually an adapter that fits right over a speedlight. It can then be mounted on a light stand or tripod as shown below. Or you can simply hand-hold it with the lens positioned in the opening. It’s a lot lighter (and less expensive) than a studio ring flash.
You can use it as key, fill or back light—a very flexible accessory.
